Clean Eating Sloppy Joes

So I now have an obsession with sloppy Joes. An obsession that I didn't even know I had until I made this recipe. I just figured this would be a fun new recipe to try out for the week.

I wasn't expecting anything special.

And then I made it.

And danggggg- was it good!! Like I couldn't wait to get to dinner that night because I was so excited to have this again type of good!




It's saucy without being too 'sloppy', with a great tangy taste! And talk about cheap!! Basically you just need the tomato sauce, ground turkey, and any veggie you have that you can cook down! And the rest of the ingredients are pantry staples! 

I love just how many veggies you can hide in this versatile recipe. Don't have carrots, but have some mushrooms? Sure, add them in!! Or want to add more veggies? Throw in some bell peppers, parsnips, or sweet potatoes!

We ate these as open faced sandwiches on a whole wheat bun, over quinoa, or just plain. Really there's a ton of options with it!

Clean Eating Sloppy Joes

Servings: 4 (1 cup each)


  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 cup carrots, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 lb. raw ground 93% lean turkey 
  • 1/2 tsp. sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
  • 1 cup all natural tomato sauce, no salt or sugar added
  • 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 tsp. hot pepper sauce
  • 1 tbsp. pure maple syrup


  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add carrots and onion; cook, stirring frequently (4-5 minutes, onion should be translucent)
  3. Add garlic, cook for 1 minute. Transfer mixture to a medium sized bowl. 
  4. Add turkey to skillet; cook over medium heat, breaking up the turkey until no longer pink (8-10 minutes). 
  5. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Add onion mixture, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and maple syrup. Mix well. Reduce heat to medium-low heat; gently boil, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes, or until sauce has thickened.
